IntroductionNearly 6,000 young people between the ages of 16 and 25 die each year on our nation’s highways. If there were some sort of pandemic which killed our children, we would be up in arms!
We as a people would demand a cure, such as the Polio cases in the first half of the 20th century. Thanks to Jonas Salk, who discovered a vaccine in 1952, this disease has all but been cured. Not so with the death of our young people on our highways. We as a nation have become complacent as our transportation system has grown and have accepted the fact that many of our young people are going to die. Not consciously do we think this but sub-consciously we think “not my child”! It begs the question, “Why not”? Where does the responsibility lie? Our state could do more to get the drunk drivers off the road and to enact a better seat belt law. As parents, we can set a better example of driving, such as always signaling for lane changes, turning into proper lanes of traffic, stopping with the front of our vehicle even with the stop signs, following the posted speed limits and remembering to drive safely and prudently. We as teachers need to always do our very best to instruct our students on the lesson we cover in the classroom and on the streets and highways of our state. Students too need to put forth their best effort to learn all they can about the world of the Highway Transportation System. We as the state, parents, teachers and students, working together can at last reduce the teenage deaths in the State of Montana. OBJECTIVES: To have every student capable and proficient in negotiating any and all of the streets and highways in and near Great Falls in a safe and legal manner. |
